Rab old town and harbour at golden hour.
Rab under the clouds

What to do on the island when the weather turns.

The bura wind doesn't blow every day, but when it starts, it usually stays for three. Rain is rare on Rab, but it happens. Here are seven ways to spend an overcast day — and why some of them might actually beat baking on the beach.

Begin

Less list. More feeling.

  1. 01

    Komrčar walk in light drizzle

The park is at its most peaceful when wet. The ancient cypresses turn deep green, the stone pathways glisten, and the scent of damp pine needles is incredibly rich.

  2. 02

    Rector's Palace and museum

A perfect refuge from the elements. The massive stone walls of the old palace offer solid shelter, housing a concise exhibition of the island's history in seven chapters.

  3. 03

    St. Mary's bell tower

Use the gray skies to make the climb. The view of storm clouds rolling over the Velebit range and the whipped-up sea in the channel is dramatic and worth every one of the 167 steps.

  4. 04

A long coffee in a pastry shop

Grab a window seat at Vilma or Sweet Point. Order a warm macchiato and a slice of cake, watch the raindrops trace the glass, and spend two hours reading with zero guilt.

  5. 05

    A three-hour tavern lunch

When the beach is out of the question, you have the perfect excuse for a slow lunch. Order fish soup, slow-cooked octopus, and local red wine. Let the afternoon drift away.

  6. 06

The old town late at night

Once the rain stops, the wet stone alleyways reflect the streetlamps like mirrors. The air is crisp, the crowds are gone, and the silence is almost tactile.

  7. 07

    The Lapidarium and St. Andrew's

A quiet corner within the city walls. The stone reliefs and 11th-century Romanesque architecture carry a special, solemn weight under leaden skies. A short visit is enough.
