Rabska Fjera: Step Back into 1364
Published 2026-04-22 · 5 min read
Three medieval days in July — knights, crossbows, fireworks and the smell of grilled meat. Croatia's oldest festival.
Every July 25 to 27, the streets of Rab's old town transform into a grand medieval spectacle. Rabska Fjera, the oldest and largest medieval festival in Croatia, has been celebrated since 1364 when Rab was freed from Venetian rule. For three days the streets fill with knights, crossbowmen, craftsmen, musicians and locals in costumes.
The program includes knight tournaments, crossbow competitions, a fishing village, old craft workshops, concerts and a big fireworks display. The smell of grilled meat, the sound of fanfares and the smiles of proud Rab residents make Fjera an experience remembered for a lifetime.
The festival starts on July 25 on the feast of St. James, continues on the 26th for St. Anne and ends on the 27th for St. Christopher. Today Fjera attracts thousands of visitors and shows Rab's rich history in the most vivid way.
Tip: Come early, dress lightly and prepare for crowds in the old town. Combine the visit with tasting Rab Cake and a walk through Komrčar Park. Fjera is a perfect example of how Rab preserves and celebrates its heritage.
