Rabska Fjera: Three Days of Medieval Rab
What the town looks like when modern ads disappear and torches are lit. A guide to the island's oldest festival.
Every July, from the 25th to the 27th, the old town of Rab steps back to 1364. Rabska Fjera is not just a tourist scene — it is a festival Rab keeps for its own identity. For three days, plastic tables disappear, electric lights are turned off, and the streets fill with craftsmen, knights, and the smell of freshly fried fritule.
Kaldanac is especially powerful when the first torches are lit. The whole town smells of pine resin, grilled fish, and homemade bread. You can watch blacksmiths forging swords, weavers working on ancient looms, and fishermen weaving nets right on the waterfront. The highlight is the final night when the Rab crossbowmen compete in the main square.

Useful note: don't rush. You can't experience Fjera in a hurry. Head out after 9 PM when it gets dark and the temperature drops. Wear light clothes and comfortable shoes because the stone steps get slippery under thousands of feet. Most importantly — try the local cheese and wine offered at small wooden stands. That is when you truly feel the spirit of Rab.
