Hiking Trails: Where to Walk Without a Car
A guide through the Kalifront forests, Kamenjak cliffs, and Lopar coves. Where to start, what to bring, and how to avoid the sun.
Rab is small enough that you can walk across it, yet diverse enough that you won't get bored. You don't actually need a car because most paths start right from Rab town, Banjol, or Lopar.
For easy walks, the Kalifront peninsula is the best choice. There, the dense pine forest keeps you in deep shade even in the middle of July. The trails are flat, well-marked, and ideal for family walks. The ground is soft with pine needles, which is a savior for your knees.
If you want a bigger challenge, Kamenjak is the only real choice. It is the highest ridge on the island, completely bare and exposed to the sun, but the view of Velebit on one side and the Kvarner gulf on the other is incredible. Don't go there in flip-flops — the sharp rocks demand proper hiking shoes.

Golden rule for summer: set off by 7 AM at the latest. Bring at least a liter and a half of water per person because there is no drinking water on the trails. Keep your phone charged and download the map beforehand, as signal can drop deep in the Kalifront forest.
