Goli Otok: Heavy History Near Rab
The prison that marked the last century, just five kilometers from Rab beaches. What to see and how to experience this harsh place.
Goli Otok is a place that always leaves a bitter taste, but it is an important part of Rab's local history. Located just five kilometers north of Lopar, it was an infamous political prison during the communist regime from 1949 to 1988. Today the island is abandoned, and its grey ruins stand as silent witnesses to harsh times.

From the sea, it looks like just bare stone, which is how it got its name. But once you step ashore and walk through the abandoned industrial plants, solitary cells, and administrative buildings built by the prisoners themselves, you feel the weight of the place. There is no shade, and the summer sun burns without mercy, which was part of the punishment for the men kept here.
Useful note: don't go alone without knowing the history. Take a boat excursion from Lopar that includes a local guide who understands the site history. Bring a hat, sturdy shoes, and plenty of water. After the visit, you will likely appreciate the peace and beauty of Rab beaches even more.
